Understanding

One of the things I love about R is that he understands the need for reading. A day spent on the sofa reading a book is not a wasted day according to him, or me. Not everyone I know subscribe to that view... but I don't love everyone I know as much as I love R.

Stories from the edges of science. Fun, thought provoking and led to many "did you know" between me and my husband (and yes, half the time he did, the little rat).

Couldn't wait until our holiday... Convinced myself that I probably don't want to lug 800 pages along anyway (at least not as a single book) and therefore it would be legit to buy (the library copy I was trying ot for size was just a little too dingy) and read it now. Vampires here I come!

This was the year when I started with the good intentions of keeping track of my reading. Well, fat chance. Some of the books I read during the first 3 months are in this pile, but notes about them? Not quite happening. Well, the highlights were Gaskell and Austin, as well as the Gaiman book. In the midfield the Hustvedt novel which was good, but not AS good as it has been hyped to be, and the Murakami novel which once again failed to live up to the promise of his Norwegian Woods (which I though fantastic- I guess it is always going to be downhill from those dizzying heights?). All others were good, except The Master (uah, what a bore!) and The Tiger's Child. I remember reading novels by Hayden about 15 years ago, thought they were great. This one, not so much and it is mainly the style I hate. Perhaps I should re-read the others and see what I think now? Or perhaps better leave them alone.

Bokfrågor II (tjejsnack)

Brukar inte hänga på listor speciellt ofta men nu handlar det ju om böcker :-). Dock har jag total tappat känslan för om det är vecka 17 eller inte- inget som man i USA (eller England för den delen) bryr sig om om (jo, jag vet att man kan googla, men det känns som onödigt vetande för min del).

1. Läser du mycket?
Ja. Det går upp och ner men jag skulle tippa på att jag läser minst 75 romaner om året. I år har jag faktiskt tänkt att räkna för första gången. Jag skulle ha räknat år 2003 då jag under min två mander långa (ofrivilliga) Sverigevistelse läste 50 böcker. Jo, jag gjorde lite annat än att bara läsa -fast inte så himla mycket mer.

2. Nämn tre av dina favoritböcker
Sånt kommer jag aldrig på på rak arm. De bästa i år har varit Bel Canto av Ann Patchett, The Timetraveller's Wife av Audrey Niffenegger och Anna's Book av Barbara Vine.

3. Har du någon gång funderat på att skriva själv?
Nej, jag föredrar att läsa.

4. Är du med i någon bokcirkel/bokklubb?
Ja.

5. Köper du oftast pocket eller inbundet?
I USA blir det ungefär 50:50 eftersom jag mest handlar i den utmärkta Half Price Books där jag lätt hittar inbundet för ca $7. Där styrs inköpen helt efter vad jag hittar, andrahandsbokhandlar har ju sällan ett fullt utbud. I Sverige brukar jag hålla mig till pockets och köpa 10-15 stycken per resa (dvs en gång om året).

The Shadow of the Wind var valdigt bra. Spannande, intressant tidskildring och bocker inblandat.
Crossing bones, Kathy Reichs. Lite av en besvikelse. Jag gillar huvudpersonen Brennan skarpt men just har kanns det omstandigt och bara sadar. Med en viss reservation for att jag laste den strax innan jag lamnade in min fellowshipansokan, dvs under en superstressad period da jag har mattligt med talamod.
LOTR Har kopt en ny upplaga och den ar verkligen vad jag letat efter- ganska kompakt, inbunden, lagom stor text och bra marginaler.
Nar jag forst laste LOTR som 15-aring sa lanade jag mammas och pappas bocker. De var 70-tals pocket som da (1985) inte langre inneholl ett klistrigt klister= sidorna foll ur. Kopte da en annan svensk upplaga som ar jattefin: inbunden den med men lite storre an den har. Tyvarr upptackte jag vid omlasning for ett par ar sedan att oversattningen ar ratt tafflig sa vi kopte serien som massmarket pocket. Lasbart, men inte njutbart for textstorleken ar lite for liten, pappret av dalig kvalite och (det varsta enligt mig) marginerna snala. Hittade den har boken pa Half Price Books for $7- bargain! Tyvarr bara forsta delen, de andra delarna ska jag fa en engelsk kompis att kopa med sig nasta gang hon kommer (det ar en engelsk upplaga).
